Artist statement
Abstraction unveils the infinite, where nature's decay becomes renewal and freedom emerges from surrender.
Sandra Jane Heard is a British sculptor and abstract artist (1966, Haverhill) Sandra's mixed media art incorporates a diverse range of materials, including found objects, ink, paper, and natural elements such as Mitsumata branches. Through her art she explores themes of nature, time, and transformation.
Inspired by the landscapes around her—ranging from the wooded views of Minneapolis to the vast Sierra Nevada Mountains—her art delves into the interplay between the physical world and the more elusive aspects of memory, emotion, and imagination. The catalyst for her latest series was the experience of isolation, where limited views from a window became portals to a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Through ink on paper and sculptural forms created from Mitsumata branches, Heard captures the ephemeral beauty of skeletal trees, expansive skies, and decaying forms in nature. Her process embraces chance, allowing the inks to bleed and blend organically, mirroring the unpredictability of life itself. This method of relinquishing control reveals a freedom that brings forth a distilled, idiosyncratic expression, where the boundaries of reality and abstraction blur.
Heard's works are a dialogue between growth and decay, where traces of life persist even as they fade. The stark simplicity of her materials contrasts with the layered complexity of her themes, resulting in pieces that evoke both a sense of loss and the possibility of renewal.
