For more than five decades, Roger Remaut has pursued an abstraction rooted in materiality. His work has long explored the expressive potential of surface through the accumulation of texture, gesture, and layered interventions. Paint is not simply applied but constructed, built into a physical presence that bears the traces of time, process, and transformation.
Transcendence presents a recent body of work produced in Portugal since 2023. Working predominantly on paper and cardboard, Remaut introduces a notable shift in scale and support while remaining deeply committed to the concerns that have shaped his practice throughout his career.
These works reveal an artist refining rather than revising his language. The monumental surfaces and found materials of earlier decades give way to a more concentrated form of expression, where every mark assumes greater significance. Layers of paint, abrasions, inscriptions, and textures unfold within intimate formats, creating works that reward close attention. What appears restrained at first gradually reveals a remarkable density of thought and material complexity.
Throughout the exhibition, surface functions as both image and memory. Scratches, traces, and accumulations evoke processes of construction and erosion, suggesting histories that remain partially visible beneath the final composition. Remaut does not seek representation; instead, he allows meaning to emerge through the interaction of material, gesture, and time.
Rather than a departure from his earlier work, Transcendence demonstrates the continued evolution of a mature artistic vision. These paintings affirm that abstraction remains not only a formal language but a way of engaging with experience itself—through matter transformed by sustained attention, intuition, and the enduring act of making.
