Under the Walls - Mediterrani Walls by Bel Mur Mixed media and cement on wood 122 x 140 cm | 2024 This work was born out of the artist’s need to convey the isolation that exists among people today. Subdued by social norms, individuals impose loneliness on themselves as a way to shield against an urban, dehumanized, consumerist, and depressive society. Within the maelstrom of concrete, we hide behind walls. As fear grows, people build thicker layers of protection against everything perceived as foreign, without realizing that they are in fact imprisoning themselves. These layers become deeper and deeper, eventually leading to complete immobilization. The artist reflects on a corporatocratic and heteropatriarchal system that classifies, limits, divides, and disconnects. It portrays a sleeping society — one devoid of critical thinking — driven by fear and immersed in solitude.
