Artist Statement

Julien Dumont is a Swiss / French photographer (1984, Geneva). Light and shadow are not just elements in Julien Dumont’s work—they are the language through which he translates emotion into imagery. His photography exists in the space between contrast and nuance, where illumination and obscurity dance to reveal the unseen.

Since childhood, visual art has been his way of bypassing words, expressing the intangible through photography, drawing, and painting. Though he initially pursued a structured career in business, the pull of artistic exploration never left him. In 2018, he and his wife let go of stability to embark on an open-ended journey, one that led him deeper into the act of seeing—of truly seeing.

Travel became his first canvas, but it was in stillness, in fleeting moments of golden light hitting a textured wall, in silhouettes dissolving into darkness, that his artistic voice took shape. He seeks imperfection, contrast, and rawness, drawn to compositions where geometry and emotion intertwine. His work invites the viewer to look again, to see the interplay of light and dark as more than a visual contrast—but as a metaphor for existence itself.

In 2022, his understanding of light changed forever. The loss of his child shattered everything, casting him into a space where grief and love coexisted in every shadow. Photography became his means of reconstructing, of navigating sorrow, of finding slivers of illumination even in the darkest corners.

Now, more than ever, Julien believes that beauty is not just found in what is obvious—it often lingers in the in-between, in the imperfect, in the spaces where shadow and light collide. Through his work, he captures these fleeting intersections, offering an invitation to see the extraordinary within the everyday.

Fire and Loss: Julien Dumont's Lens on a Landscape Transformed

The summer of 2025 brought some of the fiercest wildfires Portugal has ever seen. Through a series of intimate portraitures, Swiss photographer Julien Dumont captures the deeply human side of the catastrophe — the loss, resilience, and quiet dignity of a community confronting a drastically altered landscape. This is the story of Relva Velha and its people, reshaped by the flames.
