Artist Statement
Tatyana Cristina (born 2001, Lisbon) is a Portuguese visual artist whose abstract mixed media work is a continuous exploration of painting as a means of expression and reflection. She delves into abstraction, drawing from visual memories, personal fascinations, and inner anxieties to shape an imaginative world that is surreal, ironic, and at times carries a critical edge.
In the initial layers of paint, usually abstract in nature, forms begin to emerge, evoking landscapes, unexpected encounters, or references that are gradually revealed and emphasized throughout the creative process. In doing so, the artist incorporates fragments of images she encounters and collects in her daily life, giving rise to a complex and multifaceted visual narrative. Each element is carefully selected, creating a universe where chaos and order meet and intertwine.
In Tatyana’s paintings, the spontaneity of the first brushstrokes—gestural and dynamic—clashes with the almost obsessive precision of image selection and composition. This contrast between freedom and control reflects her creative process, where intuition and reflection walk hand in hand. Her works explore deep and personal themes, such as inner inquiries, anxieties, and desires, often
triggered by objects found in her everyday life. These objects, often simple and seemingly ordinary, serve as bridges that the artist uses to create connections with her childhood or other intimate and transformative experiences.
Each piece created by Tatyana is, therefore, a true investigation of identity, memory, and the constant dialogue between the individual and the world around them. By bringing together past and present, memory and daily experience, her works reveal emotional and reflective layers, inviting the viewer on a visual journey that challenges, provokes, and moves.
