In 2023, at the age of 81, Roger Remaut relocated to Portugal, marking a new chapter in a career spanning more than five decades of abstraction. Working from his Portuguese studio, he has produced a new body of work that reflects both continuity and transformation—rooted in the same material sensitivity, technical rigor, and philosophical depth that have defined his practice since its beginnings in postwar Belgium, yet marked by a shift toward greater intimacy and focus.
Many of these recent works are created on cardboard, while others explore diverse surfaces and materials. The reduced scale of these pieces does not diminish their presence; rather, it concentrates it. Each surface carries the authority of decades of making—layered, textured, and worked with the instinctive physicality and disciplined touch that have long been hallmarks of his approach. Gesture, material, and philosophical inquiry remain central, now distilled into compositions that are quieter, more focused, and intensely immediate.
This exhibition brings together works produced in Portugal from 2023 onward, presenting a clear picture of Remaut’s current practice. Far from a retrospective reflection, these works demonstrate the continued evolution of his abstract language, showing how an artist with over fifty years of mastery can transform scale and surface while preserving the depth, complexity, and emotional resonance of his vision.
In these intimate works, Remaut does not look backward—he concentrates a lifetime of experience into each mark and surface. The exhibition is a testament to the enduring power of creation: even in smaller formats, his abstraction remains expansive, deliberate, and profoundly alive.
